Fire extinguisher signs identify the location and type of extinguisher for anyone who needs to use it in an emergency. Australian Standard AS 2444 requires that portable fire extinguishers be identified by a sign that is visible from at least 10 metres — making compliant signage a legal requirement in most commercial and industrial premises. Signs start from $10 with fast delivery Australia-wide.

Types of fire extinguisher sign

We stock two categories of sign:

  • Agent-specific signs — identify the extinguisher type at a glance. Match the sign to the extinguisher installed: ABE, CO2, Wet Chemical, Foam, Water, or BE.
  • Location signs — general “Fire Extinguisher” signs for mixed installations or where the agent type is less critical. Available in standard, medium, large, arrow, and right angle formats to suit different mounting positions.

For vehicles, forklifts, and mobile plant, see the fire extinguisher vehicle sticker — designed to withstand outdoor conditions.

Placement and compliance

Under AS 2444 (Selection and Location of Portable Fire Extinguishers), signs must be:

  • Mounted at a height where the bottom of the sign is between 2.0m and 3.5m above the floor — or at a height clearly visible from at least 10m in all directions
  • Positioned directly above or adjacent to the extinguisher
  • Visible and unobstructed at all times — not behind doors, machinery, or stored goods

Signs must also be checked during the 6-monthly AS 1851 inspection — damaged or missing signs must be replaced to maintain compliance.

Frequently asked questions

Are fire extinguisher signs required by law in Australia?

Yes. AS 2444 requires that portable fire extinguishers be identified by a compliant location sign visible from at least 10 metres. The National Construction Code (NCC) references AS 2444 for fire safety signage in commercial buildings. Failure to display correct signs can result in a failed fire safety inspection. Residential homes are not legally required to display signs, but they are recommended where extinguishers are installed in garages or sheds.

What does a fire extinguisher sign look like?

Australian fire extinguisher signs are red and white with standardised pictograms and text identifying the extinguisher type or location. Agent-specific signs show the extinguisher agent class (ABE, CO2, etc.) so that anyone responding to a fire can confirm they are using the right type. Signs conform to the pictogram and colour requirements of AS 1319 (Safety signs for the occupational environment).

Where should a fire extinguisher sign be placed?

Mount the sign directly above the extinguisher on the wall, with the bottom of the sign between 2.0m and 3.5m above the floor. In large open areas (warehouses, factory floors), the sign should be visible from at least 10m. Where extinguishers are stored inside a cabinet, the sign goes on or above the cabinet door.

What is the difference between ABE and CO2 fire extinguisher signs?

The sign matches the extinguisher type. An ABE sign identifies a dry chemical powder extinguisher (white band, covers Class A, B, and E fires). A CO2 sign identifies a carbon dioxide extinguisher (black band, covers Class B and E fires). Using the wrong sign in a workplace is a compliance issue — if the agent type changes during a service, the sign should be updated to match.

Can I use a general “Fire Extinguisher” sign instead of an agent-specific sign?

Yes — a general Fire Extinguisher location sign meets the AS 2444 location requirement and is acceptable where multiple extinguisher types are installed nearby or where the agent class is clearly labelled on the extinguisher body. Agent-specific signs are best practice in environments where the wrong agent choice could cause harm (e.g. CO2 in server rooms, wet chemical in commercial kitchens).
