Description

The large UV plastic fire extinguisher cover protects extinguishers up to 9kg from UV degradation, dust, and surface weathering when a full cabinet is not required. Made from 0.175mm UV stable frosted plastic film, it slips over the extinguisher body and extends service life in outdoor, vehicle-mounted, and harsh environment installations — without blocking access in an emergency.

Printed with “Fire Extinguisher” in bold text so the extinguisher remains identifiable when covered. Standard specification for vehicle-mounted, outdoor wall-mounted, and exposed extinguishers across commercial, industrial, and marine sites.

Where to Use

  • Vehicle-mounted extinguishers exposed to sun and dust
  • Outdoor wall-mounted extinguishers not housed in a cabinet
  • Construction site and temporary outdoor installations
  • Marine and coastal environments
  • Industrial facilities with dust, fume, or chemical exposure
  • Any extinguisher exposed to direct UV that would fade or degrade the cylinder label

Key Features

  • UV stable frosted plastic — protects from UV fading and degradation
  • Fits extinguishers up to 9kg
  • 0.175mm thickness — durable enough for everyday use, reusable

Compliance & Servicing

Extinguisher covers do not affect the AS 1851 servicing schedule. Extinguishers must be inspected every 6 months and serviced annually by a licensed fire protection technician. Covers should be removed for servicing and replaced afterwards. Confirm with your technician that the cover is not interfering with pressure gauge visibility during routine 6-monthly checks — for reels with a fixed gauge position, the cover may need to be partially removed for inspection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cover vs Cabinet — Which to Choose

A UV plastic cover provides basic protection from sun, dust, and light weathering at minimal cost. It does not protect against rain ingress, vandalism, or tampering. A fire extinguisher cabinet provides full weather sealing, impact protection, and optional lockout — at a higher cost and larger footprint. Use a cover for vehicle-mounted and low-risk outdoor installations; use a cabinet where the extinguisher is fully exposed to rain, at risk of damage, or in a location where access control is required.

What size extinguisher does this cover fit?

This is the large size cover, designed to fit extinguishers up to 9kg. It suits 9kg ABE dry chemical powder extinguishers and most other standard 9kg cylinder sizes. For smaller extinguishers — 2.5kg or 4.5kg — a smaller cover may provide a better fit. If you’re covering a 2.5kg or 4.5kg unit, check our small and medium cover options.

Does the cover stay on securely in a vehicle?

The cover is a slip-on design without fasteners — it will stay on in standard conditions but may shift if the vehicle is travelling at speed with the extinguisher exposed outside the cab (for example, on a tray or bull bar mounting). For vehicle applications at highway speeds, consider adding a cable tie or securing the cover at the base, or upgrade to a cabinet for full protection. For cab-mounted extinguishers in an enclosed vehicle, the slip-on cover is suitable.

Can I still see the pressure gauge through the cover?

The frosted plastic reduces visibility of the extinguisher body and label. For routine monthly owner checks and 6-monthly AS 1851 inspections, the cover should be slid up or removed to check the pressure gauge reading. The cover should never be left on in a way that permanently obscures the gauge.

How long does a UV cover last?

UV stable plastic covers typically last 3–5 years in outdoor conditions, depending on UV intensity and exposure. In harsh tropical or desert environments with intense direct sun, covers may need replacing more frequently. The 0.175mm thick UV stable film is rated for outdoor use, but if the cover becomes brittle, yellowed, or cracked, replace it — a degraded cover provides no useful UV protection. Covers are low cost and worth replacing on schedule.

Is a UV cover required under Australian Standards?

UV covers are not specifically mandated by Australian Standards, but AS 1851 requires that extinguishers remain in a serviceable condition. Extinguishers with faded, illegible labels, or UV-degraded cylinders may fail a service inspection. Using a UV cover is a practical way to maintain label legibility and cylinder condition, particularly in outdoor installations where UV exposure is significant. Your fire protection technician may recommend a cover as part of a routine service recommendation.
