Fire hose reels are a fixed fire suppression system required in most commercial, industrial, and multi-storey residential buildings across Australia. Unlike portable extinguishers, a fire hose reel provides a continuous water supply — giving occupants a sustained first-attack capability before fire services arrive. All reels and systems stocked here comply with AS 2441 (installation of fire hose reels). Prices from $230 with fast delivery Australia-wide.

Complete fire hose reel systems

Our complete reel kits include everything needed for a code-compliant installation — reel drum, hose, nozzle, and mounting hardware. No sourcing individual parts separately.

Model Hose length Best for Price
36m Complete Fire Hose Reel 36m Standard commercial premises, offices, warehouses $230
Swing Arm 36m Fire Hose Reel 36m Tight spaces — swings out from wall for 270° hose reach $295
50m Complete Fire Hose Reel 50m Large floor areas, warehouses, loading docks $315
Stainless Steel Fire Hose Reel 36m Coastal or corrosive environments — marine grade finish $450

36m vs 50m — which do you need?

Hose length determines the coverage radius from the reel mounting point. AS 2441 requires that every point on each floor of a building is reachable by the hose. Use this as a guide:

  • 36m hose — covers a radius of approximately 32m from the reel (accounting for hose routing around obstacles). Suitable for most standard commercial tenancies and single-floor buildings up to ~600m².
  • 50m hose — covers a radius of approximately 45m. Required for larger floor plates, open warehouses, and buildings where a single reel must cover a greater area.

Your building certifier or fire protection engineer can confirm the required coverage for your premises under the National Construction Code (NCC).

Swing arm vs fixed reel

Both types mount to the wall and connect to your building’s water supply.

  • Fixed reel — the drum is stationary. Hose is pulled out in the direction the nozzle is pointed. Best for open areas where the hose can run freely in a straight line.
  • Swing arm reel — the drum pivots up to 270° from the wall, allowing the hose to be directed to either side before pulling out. Preferred in corridors, plant rooms, and tight spaces where a fixed reel’s reach would be blocked by walls or machinery.

Compliance and maintenance

Fire hose reels in commercial buildings must be installed and maintained in accordance with AS 2441 and inspected under AS 1851:

  • 6-monthly inspection by a licensed fire protection technician
  • Annual flow test to confirm adequate water pressure and flow rate
  • Hose must be fully extended and re-wound during each service inspection
  • Reel location, signage, and clearance must meet NCC requirements

Installation must be carried out by a licensed plumber and fire protection contractor. A licensed technician must commission the system and confirm it meets AS 2441 before the building is occupied.

Frequently asked questions

Is a fire hose reel required by law in Australia?

Yes — the National Construction Code (NCC) requires fire hose reels in most Class 5–9 buildings (commercial, industrial, and high-rise residential) above a certain size threshold. The specific requirement depends on building class, floor area, and occupancy type. Your building certifier or fire safety engineer can confirm whether a reel is required for your premises. If you are retrofitting an existing building, contact a licensed fire protection contractor for a compliance assessment.

What is the difference between a fire hose reel and a fire extinguisher?

A fire extinguisher is a portable, self-contained unit with a limited discharge (8–20 seconds for typical sizes). A fire hose reel is permanently plumbed to your building’s water supply and provides a continuous, sustained water stream for as long as the supply is on — making it more effective for larger fires or prolonged suppression before fire services arrive. Most commercial buildings require both: extinguishers for immediate first attack, and a hose reel as the sustained backup.

How often does a fire hose reel need to be serviced?

Every 6 months, as required by AS 1851. The inspection includes checking hose condition, reel operation, nozzle function, water flow, and cabinet/enclosure integrity. An annual flow test verifies that the water supply meets the required pressure and volume. All service records must be maintained on a log attached to the reel or cabinet.

Can I install a fire hose reel myself?

No — installation must be carried out by a licensed plumber (for the water supply connection) and a licensed fire protection contractor (for commissioning and compliance certification). Unauthorised installation will not meet AS 2441 and will fail a building fire safety inspection. You can, however, supply your own reel and accessories for a contractor to install, which often reduces the overall cost.

What water pressure is needed for a fire hose reel?

AS 2441 requires a minimum static pressure of 200 kPa and a minimum flow rate of 0.33 litres per second at the nozzle. Most commercial mains water supplies meet this, but older buildings and high-rise premises may require a booster pump. Your fire protection contractor will carry out a flow test during commissioning to confirm your supply meets the standard.
