Description

The medium steel fire extinguisher cabinet is a wall-mounted enclosure for extinguishers up to 4.5kg — keeping the unit protected, clearly visible, and accessible when needed. Galvanised steel construction with a red powder coat finish and break-glass lock: the glazed front panel must be smashed to access the extinguisher, providing tamper resistance and a clear visual indicator that the cabinet has been accessed. Fitted with a 003 lock and key system.

Suitable for offices, retail premises, commercial kitchens, warehouses, and any indoor location where a free-standing bracket isn’t appropriate. Approved and manufactured to complement Australian fire protection installations.

Compliance & Servicing

Fire extinguisher cabinets must allow the extinguisher to be clearly visible and readily accessible in accordance with AS 2444. The break-glass mechanism ensures the cabinet can always be opened in an emergency. Cabinets should be inspected as part of the 6-monthly AS 1851 routine service — confirm the glass is intact, the extinguisher is correctly seated, and the cabinet is clearly labelled with the appropriate fire extinguisher location sign.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where Medium Steel Cabinets Are Used

  • Office buildings and commercial premises
  • Retail stores and shopping centres
  • Stairwells and building exit routes
  • Reception areas and lobbies
  • Warehouses and storage areas
  • Any location requiring a secured, tamper-resistant extinguisher enclosure

What size extinguisher fits in the medium steel cabinet?

The medium cabinet (W280 × D210 × H545mm) suits extinguishers up to 4.5kg — this covers 1kg, 1.5kg, 2kg, 2.5kg, and 4.5kg ABE, CO2, and wet chemical portables. It does not accommodate a 9kg ABE or larger units. If you need a cabinet for a 9kg ABE, CO2, or wet chemical extinguisher, see the large steel cabinet (W280 × D230 × H750mm). For a 2kg or smaller CO2, the medium cabinet is the standard fit.

What is a break-glass cabinet and how does it work?

A break-glass cabinet has a glazed front panel that must be smashed to open the door and access the extinguisher. The 003 key allows authorised access without breaking the glass — for servicing, inspections, or repositioning. The break-glass mechanism serves two purposes: tamper resistance (prevents casual removal) and a visual indicator (if the glass is broken, the extinguisher has been accessed or removed and needs to be checked). Under AS 2444, the extinguisher must remain readily accessible — the break-glass system satisfies this requirement because anyone can smash the glass in an emergency.

Does the cabinet come with the extinguisher?

No — the cabinet is sold separately. The fire extinguisher must be purchased separately and mounted inside the cabinet. The cabinet is sized for extinguishers up to 4.5kg — confirm the dimensions of your extinguisher before purchasing. Most standard 1kg–4.5kg ABE and CO2 portables will fit the medium cabinet. If in doubt, contact us with your extinguisher model and we’ll confirm the fit.

Can this cabinet be used outdoors?

The medium steel cabinet is designed for indoor use. For outdoor or exposed environments, a UV-treated plastic cabinet or a cover bag is more appropriate — the steel construction and powder coat finish are not UV or weather-rated for prolonged direct sun or rain exposure. For semi-sheltered outdoor locations (under eaves, in a car park), short-term exposure is generally acceptable but long-term outdoor placement will cause the finish to degrade faster. Contact your fire protection technician if you need advice on the best solution for an outdoor location.

How is the cabinet mounted?

The cabinet mounts to a wall using the pre-drilled holes in the back panel. Standard fixing is with appropriate masonry anchors into concrete or brick, or timber screws into a stud wall. Mount the cabinet at a height where the extinguisher is clearly visible and reachable by building occupants — typically with the handle of the extinguisher at approximately shoulder to head height (1.5–1.8m from the floor). Under AS 2444, the extinguisher must be visible and accessible from the main approach directions.
