Description

A plastic locking wheel cover for fire hydrant landing valve handwheels. The locking wheel fits over the handwheel of a landing valve to prevent unauthorised or accidental rotation of the valve — protecting the fire main from unintended pressurisation or depressurisation between fire brigade operations and scheduled inspections. Padlock and key not included — this is the wheel component only. For a complete kit, also order a 003 padlock (WC003KP or WC003KPL).

The WCFFS-W is the wheel-only option for buildings where 003 padlocks are already on site. It fits standard fire hydrant landing valve handwheels and accepts a 003-keyed padlock through the hasp to secure the wheel in position. For the Hydrant G-Lock alternative — a self-contained locking clamp with in-built barrel, no separate padlock required — see WC003-GLOCK.

Key Features

  • Fits standard fire hydrant landing valve handwheels
  • Hasp hole accepts a standard 003-keyed padlock
  • Plastic construction — lightweight and durable
  • Wheel only — order a 003 padlock (WC003KP or WC003KPL) separately

Technical Specifications

  • SKU: WCFFS-W
  • Construction: Plastic
  • Locking method: Hasp hole for 003-keyed padlock
  • Padlock compatibility: WC003KP, WC003KPL (003 key profile)
  • Includes: Wheel only — padlock and key sold separately

Compliance & Installation

Confirm with your fire protection engineer or contractor that a locking wheel is acceptable for the specific landing valve installation and the applicable fire authority requirements. The locking wheel must be removable by fire brigade personnel in an emergency — the 003 padlock key should be accessible to fire brigade on arrival (e.g., in a building key box or handed over by building management). Installation and any associated maintenance checks by a licensed fire protection contractor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where This Locking Wheel Is Used

  • Fire hydrant landing valves in buildings where handwheel locking is required
  • Landing valve cabinets in publicly accessible areas (stairwells, car parks, lobbies) where accidental or unauthorised valve operation is a risk
  • Replacement of damaged or missing hydrant locking wheels at AS 1851 inspection
  • New hydrant installations where a separate padlock-based locking system is preferred over the G-Lock design

What is the difference between the hydrant locking wheel and the Hydrant G-Lock?

The Hydrant Locking Wheel (WCFFS-W) is a wheel cover that fits over the valve handwheel, secured by a separately purchased 003 padlock through a hasp hole. The Hydrant G-Lock (WC003-GLOCK) is a self-contained clamp that wraps around the valve body with an in-built barrel lock — no separate padlock required. The G-Lock also has a snap-lock emergency cut-away feature. The locking wheel and a separate padlock is an older conventional method; the G-Lock is a more modern, self-contained alternative. Both are operated by the 003 key.

Does the locking wheel fit all landing valve handwheels?

The WCFFS-W is designed to fit standard fire hydrant landing valve handwheels. Most commercial landing valves use a standard handwheel size. If you are unsure whether the locking wheel fits the specific landing valve installed in your building, confirm with your fire protection contractor who can check the handwheel dimensions.

What padlock should I use with the hydrant locking wheel?

Any 003-keyed padlock will operate the hasp on the locking wheel. The WC003KP (standard shackle, brass) or WC003KPL (red finish, P100) are the standard choices. Use the WC003KP-LS (60mm long shackle) only if the hasp geometry of the specific locking wheel requires extra clearance. The red padlock (WC003KPL) may be preferred for visual identification in public areas.

Can fire brigade access the valve in an emergency if the locking wheel is padlocked?

Fire brigade personnel carry 003 keys as part of their standard equipment for accessing fire safety systems. In an emergency, they will unlock the padlock with their 003 key and remove the locking wheel before operating the valve. For this system to work reliably, the padlock must be 003-keyed (not a general hardware padlock), and the locking wheel must be in working order. A seized or corroded padlock is a defect that must be rectified at AS 1851 inspection.

Is a hydrant locking wheel required on all landing valves?

No — a hydrant locking wheel is not a mandatory requirement on all landing valves. It is an optional security measure used where the building owner, fire protection engineer, or fire authority has determined that the risk of unauthorised or accidental valve operation justifies a locking device. Some fire authorities or building designs require or recommend them; others do not. Your fire protection contractor will advise whether a locking device is appropriate for your building.
