Description

A right-angle fire hose reel location sign in UV-rated PVC plastic. Two-panel construction that projects at 90° from the wall, displaying the hose reel symbol and text on both faces — 150mm × 225mm per panel. Designed for corridors, aisles, and passageways where the hose reel is installed mid-run and occupants approach from both directions. The right-angle format makes the sign visible from both ends of the corridor simultaneously, meeting the visibility requirement without a second sign.

In any corridor installation where the approach to the hose reel can be from either direction, a flat wall-mounted sign is only visible from one end. The SHRA resolves this by projecting outward at right angles, so occupants approaching from either direction can see the sign at distance and identify the reel location before they arrive. It is the standard specification for mid-corridor hose reel installations in commercial buildings.

Where to Use

  • Mid-corridor hose reel installations in commercial buildings
  • Warehouse racking aisles with reels accessible from both ends
  • Industrial walkways and maintenance corridors
  • Hospital corridors and healthcare facility passageways
  • Shopping centre arcades and enclosed retail passages
  • Any installation where bi-directional corridor approach makes a flat sign insufficient

Key Features

  • Two-panel right-angle construction — visible from both directions along a corridor
  • 150mm × 225mm per panel — compact projection footprint for corridor use
  • UV-rated PVC plastic — long service life without fading
  • Rounded corners — safe in pedestrian areas

Compliance & Placement

Under AS 2441:2005, hose reel installations require a compliant location sign. The right-angle sign should be mounted at a minimum of 2.0m above floor level, projecting perpendicularly from the wall above or adjacent to the reel installation. At this height the sign is visible from both ends of the corridor at the approach distance. In corridors with standard 2.4–3.0m ceiling heights, mounting at 2.0–2.2m keeps the sign well above head height while remaining visible at distance. Confirm sign condition at each AS 1851 service.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I use the right-angle sign versus the flat medium sign?

Use the right-angle sign (SHRA) when the hose reel is installed at a point where occupants approach from both directions along a corridor or aisle. Use the flat medium sign (SHRM) when the reel is at a wall location in an open space, or at the end of a corridor where approach is from a single direction. If the installation is in a mid-corridor position and there is any question about visibility from both approach directions, the right-angle sign is the correct choice.

Does a right-angle sign count as one sign or two?

The right-angle sign is a single product — one two-panel sign that projects from the wall. It counts as one sign for compliance purposes and is designed to meet the visibility requirement for both approach directions with a single installation. You do not need to install both a flat sign and a right-angle sign for the same reel.

How far does the sign project from the wall?

Each panel is 150mm wide, so the sign projects 150mm from the wall surface at right angles. In standard commercial corridors (minimum 1.0m width under NCC), this projection does not create a practical obstruction when mounted at 2.0m or above. In narrow corridors or where mounting height is at the minimum 2.0m, verify the projection is not at head-strike height for taller occupants. Mounting at 2.2m or above generally eliminates this concern in corridors with normal foot traffic.

Can I use the SHRA for a combined hose reel and hydrant location?

No — the SHRA displays the hose reel symbol only. If the installation includes both a hose reel and a fire hydrant at the same point, use the combined right-angle sign (SHFH-ANGLE) which displays both symbols on a single right-angle panel. Using the hose reel-only sign for a combined installation creates confusion — occupants may not realise the hydrant is also accessible at that location.

What material is the right-angle hose reel sign made from?

The SHRA is constructed from UV-rated PVC plastic with UV-rated inks — long service life without fading or colour degradation. UV-rated PVC is the standard material for fire safety signage in Australian commercial buildings. It resists colour shift and surface degradation from UV exposure, maintaining legibility over the life of the installation without requiring replacement due to fading.
